How To Customize The Inbox Section In Gmail

Customizing the inbox section of your Gmail account not only makes it neat and clean but also saves you time and effort. When your thousands of emails are organized, you don’t have to manually go over them to search for a certain email that you need. One way to sort your emails is by putting the ones that are important or the ones you want to view first at the top of your inbox. This prevents you from searching and looking for it every time you need it.

How to change the layout of your inbox?

Step 1:

Click on the Gear icon or the Settings then click on the “See all settings.” Once the settings window is opened, click on the “Inbox” tab.

Step 2:

Under the “Inbox type:” you are given five options to choose from.

To help you decide which one to choose, we have summarized what each of the options can do for you.

  • Default will show the emails in the order that you received them. Older ones stay at the bottom and newer ones on top. This is if you did not choose any inbox tabs under default.
  • Important first will put the emails which Gmail predicted as important on top of your inbox with a yellow marker. This marker can be removed if you think the email marked is really not important, just click on the marker and it will be removed.
  • Unread first option will project the unread emails above all the recent emails.
  • Starred first option will put the emails with stars on top of the email followed by everything else.
  • Priority Inbox will put the emails that you interact with the most on top of your inbox.

In this example, we will choose to prioritize the unread emails so we will click on “Unread first”.

Step 3:

If you want to customize your inbox sections, click on “Customize Priority Inbox”.

Step 4:

To add a section, click on the “Add section”. As you can see in our example below, there is already a section labeled “Unread”. This is because we already set our inbox type as “Unread first”. However, you can always change it if you want to.

Step 5:

Before we will add another section, we will first configure the “Unread” section by clicking on the “Options” button. Under “Options”, you are given choices on how many items your “Unread” section can show. In this example, we will opt for “25 items”.

Step 6:

Customize sections 2, 3, and 4 the way you want. In this example, we will choose “Important”, “Starred”, and “Everything else” as our additional Inbox section.

Step 7:

Once you are finished customizing your Inbox sections, scroll down until you will see the “Save Changes” button then click on it.

Step 8:

To check the changes that you made, refresh your Gmail account and click on Inbox. It should show the Inbox sections that you have customized just like in our example below. To show the messages under each section, just click on the arrow button beside the section name.
